Tom’s Tips August 2026
- Our Farmer’s Market is open every Wednesday and Saturday, 8am – noon (or until sold out), through the Summer. We are still accepting new vendors. It’s free to sell. Learn more.
- As we enter the hotter portion of Summer, it’s best to try and water your plants in the morning, rather than during the heat of the day or late in the evenings. Watering late in the evening, under high humidity can create an environment for disease problems. Overhead watering during the heat of the day can cause burn damage to your plants.
- Give your lawn a “Shot in the Grass” …it is still a good time to fertilize your Bermuda grass. We recommend Ross 21-5-8 with 4% Iron, Scotts Lawn Pro, 34-0-0 11S, and 46-0-0 fertilizer blends.
- Supplement your flowers and veggie plants with Miracle-Gro water soluble fertilizer or Osmocote to keep them thriving and to promote more blooms.
- Be on guard for bagworms on cedars and junipers. Should you encounter a bagworm, we recommend applying a Systemic Insect Control with Orthene (Acephate) or Bagworm spray with Spinosad, ASAP.
- Get serious about backyard bug control! Ortho Home Defense Granules are a great pet/kid friendly option to control insects in your lawn and garden.
- We also have Tempo, Cyonara, Bifen, and others, to keep insects from BUGGING YOU.
- Keep your plants from sweating… we have some nice Grade A Cedar and Redwood Mulch, in 3cf. bags, to brighten up your landscape. New lower price.. $9.99 for Grade A Cedar and $10.99 for Redwood.
- Continue to implement fly control for your animals. We recommend ADM Summer Beef Mineral with IGR Rumensin, and Garlic. Also available with CTC.
- NOW is the time to plant Japanese Millet! Japanese Millet is an excellent crop to plant around your pond or in wet areas to attract waterfowl. It matures very quickly (50 – 60 days) and makes an abundance of grain for waterfowl and other species of gamebirds. We suggest planting 20 – 25 pounds per acre.
- Just received a new shipment of Forage Ryegrass. We also have Turnips, Daikon Radish, and other Brassicas for late Summer and Fall Planting as well as pre-Inoculated Winter Peas.
- Our Premium Fall Wildlife Mix will be available by the end of the month. We recommend planting 50 pounds/acre in mid-September through mid-October.
You still have time to plant Warm Season Annuals, such as: Sorghum Sudan/BMR/Piper Sudan/Millet/Cowpeas. Ask us about Cover Crops!
