Tips from Tom Ross

April 2024

  • Mark your calendars!  Our Annual Plant Days Events are this month…

  • Chickasha – April 4-6, 2024.

  • El Reno – April 11-13, 2024.

  • Fresh garden seed has arrived! Get your ground worked up, it’s time to start your garden. April is the best time to plant your green beans, sweet corn, squash, and cucumber seed.

  • This month is a great time to plant tomatoes, peppers, and other veggie plants. We carry many varieties adapted for our growing area! When planting your tomatoes, we recommend you follow the steps in ‘Granny’s Tomato Recipe’ (found in the Ross Fact Sheets section, below).

  • April is still a good time to plant (and fertilize) your shade grass – we carry the following turf fescues: Titan RX, Titan TLC, High Performance Fescue Blend, and Crossfire 4. We recommend Scotts Lawn Pro or our Ross 21-5-8 fertilizer blend.

  • Be sure and give your fescue (shade grasses) a little drink during dry spells this month.

  • When the Bermuda has greened up over 50% of your lawn, it’s time for a “Shot in the Grass”.  We recommend Ross 21-5-8 with 4% Iron, Scotts Lawn Pro, 34-0-0 11S, and 46-0-0 fertilizer blends.

  • Springtime is here, both stores are receiving weekly plant trucks with shrubs, bedding plants, veggies, and flowers.  With early Spring coming, some plants could be in short supply.  Shop early and often for the best selection!

  • Remember, it is time to prune early spring flowering shrubs, such as: Azalea, Quince, and Forsythia, AFTER they are finished blooming. Summer flowering plants that bloom off new growth, such as: Althea, Crape Myrtle, and Butterfly Bush, can be pruned prior to blooming, if needed.

  • Apply soil amendments to your flower beds and garden for better results.  We suggest: Peat Moss, HUMALFA Nature’s Prescription, Cotton Burr Compost, The Cow Organic Compost and Manure.

  • We have some nice Grade A Cedar and Redwood Mulch, in 3cf. bags, to brighten up your landscape.

  • Weed-B-Gon, Trimec, and other broadleaf herbicides can still be applied to control winter weeds that have come up.  Be sure to do this when temperatures are above 50 degrees.

  • Book your Sorghum-Sudan, Piper Sudan, Hybrid Pearl Millet, German Strain R Millet, Browntop Millet, BMR Sorghum-Sudan – some are in very short supply. Call Mason or Tom in El Reno and/or Steve or Rusty in Chickasha to book.

  • Now is the time to start thinking about fly control for your animals.  Check out the information video below to learn more!
